PURCHASING OF NEW EQUIPMENT

If you purchase new and expensive equipment, there are several things you should do immediately:
  • 1. See if your home owners and automotive insurance policies will cover damage or theft of your equipment;
  • 2. Be sure to take photographs of your new equipment in case of theft or damage occurring to it;
  • 3. Do not advertise to everyone what your new equipment is to avoid having someone to decide to break into your house or car. There are many persons in the industry that enumerate all of their equipment online if they are advertising their professional services and that is understandable; however, if you are just an individual, it is best to refrain from communicating that information on a public forum;
  • 4. If you are purchasing equipment from established businesses, be sure to thoroughly inspect the list of included items prior to allowing the passage of time. If something was left out of your box/kit, then you must report that immediately.
  • 5. Be sure you are not purchasing stolen equipment! You can locate the serial numbers of your camera system (or the one that you are thinking about purchasing) and then check those numbers with the NET POLICE These folks strive to help report the stolen equipment and reduce the chances that you will purchase stolen equipment.

    PURCHASING USED EQUIPMENT:

  • 1. Can be risky for many reasons:
  • a. It might be broken and without any warranty or ability to get your money back;
  • b. It might be stolen;
  • c. It might not have all of the owner's manuals; parts; attachments, etc.;
  • 2. It might not integrate to more modern devices you need and will cost you more money in the long run than purchasing "current" equipment.
  • 3. Older equipment often uses more electricity or battery power and will cost you more to operate. Older batteries are expensive even if you can find the correct size to replace them. Older power supplies could have already experienced thermal breakdown and might not work or could be a fire hazard.
  • 4. Older equipment that was made of metal could have experienced rusting of internal parts due to moisture in the air over the years or decades.
  • 5. Older equipment with rubber or leather might already have dry-rot and while the item appears to be in working order, you might only be purchasing an antique.
  • 6. If you are purchasing older equipment for a "collection" or to have historically props for a movie, then be sure to verify the prices being charged and comprehend that the equipment is for display purposes instead of functionality. In that case, there is no reason to avoid buying it.

    BEFORE YOU PURCHASE ANYTHING:

  • 1. Know and investigate the company or person with whom you are purchasing equipment!
  • 2. Know the return policies.
  • 3. Read all of the rules on their webpages and at their store fronts.
  • 4. Make sure you are purchasing NTSC (American) equipment and not PAL (European) as that make a huge difference on whether it will work in the appropriate country where you are making your films.
  • 5. Visit the BBB (Better Business Bureau) to see if the company is legitimate or a scam! Better Business Bureau.
  • 6. Visit the NET POLICE to learn anything about the company, equipment, or person selling items NET POLICE.
  • 7. Read "Consumers' Reports" and other similar magazines and books about the equipment you intend to purchase as these resources will help you to comprehend the benefits of making or avoiding such a purchase.
  • 8. Talk to other persons that own similar equipment as they can help educate you on whether you should go forward with the purchase or not.
  • 9. Find "user groups" online that can help you meet others with the equipment that you seek to purchase.
  • 10. If you buy online from "eBay" or any other companies; follow all of their rules about avoiding fraud as it is easy to be taken advantage of by someone. IF SOMEONE IS RUSHING YOU INTO A PURCHASE; AVOID THEM ALTOGETHER AS EITHER THE ITEM IS STOLEN OR DOES NOT EXIST. SCAM ARTISTS OFTEN SEEK TO HAVE YOU USE RULES OTHER THAN THE FORMAL ONES STATED ON eBAY AND THAT SHOULD BE A WARNING SIGN TO AVOID THEM IMMEDIATELY!
